A Small Grappling Hook

A grappling hook is defined as "a type of hook attached to a line and designed to be thrown at a target for the purpose of catching hold of it."

Such a device was figuratively thrown at me just recently, finding its target square and setting its prongs deep into my heart.

Grandkids have a way of doing that. First it was the future linebacker, Jansen, who smiled and gazed his way into my subconscious. Every time I see him, I smile and laugh no matter the circumstance, which he meets with outstretched arms to be carried so we can explore the surroundings as though on tour, which I dutifully do.

But on March 11,  three weeks ahead of schedule, six pound eight ounce Grace Beverly entered the world. Right away she started whipping that hook over her head and aimed it straight at me. Eye's closed, she wiggles, squirms, and squeaks as the cells multiply quickly, causing muscles to want to stretch and expand out of their fetal position. A very tiny package, but all appendages, seemingly in miniature, present and accounted for. I can hold her in just my hand and forearm, her head nestled perfectly in the palm of my hand. It won't be long and it will be difficult just to carry her for any extended period. It all goes too fast. If only I could somehow freeze frame this point in time.
