I became very distracted on a recent trip back from Wabasha after picking up an injured owl. All along the shore of Lake Pepin, eagles were perched, diving, flying, walking on the ice. Well over a hundred that I saw, in every shoreside tree, around every corner, on every ice floe. More eagles than crows. More than any other visible bird for that matter. Lots of juvenile's too, providing indication of healthy future generations.
Maybe because of the open water of the lake, this was a concentration of migrating birds that will disperse as spring blossoms. But ever if you wanted a close up view of the majestic bird, this river lake would be a great place to visit.
